In the summer of 2013, right after graduating college, Zach Friedland brought together thirty-five of his friends and colleagues from around Rhode Island to produce high quality recordings of his symphonic band compositions and create a musical experience for everyone to enjoy. Following the success of the project, Zach once again brought the group together in 2015 which this time included fellow composer and Rhode Island band director Michael Konnerth. Realizing the potential in store the two composers joined forces to found the Rhode Island Recording Ensemble.

Having recently completed its 7th season in the summer of 2023, the RIRE has grown significantly, now bringing in musicians and guest composers from across the country and giving the opportunity for high school students to have their pieces read by the outstanding group. The RIRE is dedicated to its mission of promoting the art of new music, fostering the creation of music for the symphonic band genre, giving opportunity to young composers to learn and grow through practical experience and enriching the community of their profession through the collaborative recording experience. Since its first season in 2013, the Rhode Island Recording Ensemble has been under the baton of Dr. Brian Cardany, Associate Director of Bands at The University of Rhode Island.
